Camping new year resolutions

Updated: Jan 1, 2021

We can all agree 2020 has not been great, let's be kind to ourself in 2021 and not take it too seriously. Let's start strong together this new year with some really fun new years resolutions. We have put together our ideas for people to shake up their camping and adventure; some just for fun, some a little scary, but all will make your camping trips something different from the usual.

Go camping in each different season

Each different season brings its own vibe of camping. Vowing to go camping at least once in each season to experience camping in all the weather of Australia has to offer. You will discover different things to do at different items of year. While summer is all for beach and adventure, winter is more relaxing and chilled, snuggled up in a blanket reading. You may surprise yourself and discover your love camping outside of summer.

Go camping device-free

It is so easy to turn to our devices when camping. Looking up maps, googling solutions to problems, seeing what there is to do on trip advisor. BUT, going away without that makes for a different experience. It will make for slower travel, you will see more and have a more relaxing time. You will be forced to ask people for directions, speak with locals about what there is to do in town. We have found that each time we do this, not looking at the screens makes the trip feel longer and we are much more relaxed by the end. We have really cherished the times we have set out to do this. Not to mention talking to locals is always a good tip to find things to do in the area.

Try a new camping spot

While we all have our favourite spots to go back to, the ones that are assured to provide just what we need. However, we challenge you to spend 2021 exploring new camping locations, see other locations and see something new. Who knows, you may find a new favourite secret spot.

Try new camping recipes

Just like the camping spot above, it is so easy to just go to the easy and familiar recipes that you know works. But meals are an opportunity to explore too! There is so much fun in trying new recipes, and if they work its exciting. If they don't work they become funny memories about the time you made the worse tasting 'insert meal here' ever!

Cook with fire

We couldn't suggest this one enough, safely of course!. Cooking with fire brings out a different set of cooking skills, and a new set of flavours to a meal. There is something so satisfying about producing your dinner by a fire.

I will go camping _____ times in 2021

Set a camping goal! How often do you wish you could get away? Write it down and make it a target to reach in 2021. When you have a written out goal you are more likely to achieve it when the distractions of life seem more relevent. Let's face it, we might be bais but more camping is always a great target to hit.

I will learn a new skill that will help my adventures

Learning something new to try on adventures will bring much joy. This could be learning about navigation on topographic maps for bushwalking/4x4ing, photography skills, star gazing, plant/animal identification, learning knots or even weather patterns in clouds. The list is endless, see what you are interested in and make a point of learning that in 2021. It can change the way you travel, and even better it can change the way you see the world around you. Seeing the 'bush', transforms into seeing each individual plant, pretty birds start having names and what was once challenging becomes easy with new skills.

I will go camping with no destination in mind

This one can be scary but is so much fun. You have to have problem-solving skills and will need to be flexible as you will never know what will happen, but that is what makes it exciting. We love doing this, we even did this when we went to Europe! We had nothing booked and just went with what was suggested by airport staff members. It is a gamble as it may not turn out the way you imagined, but it is also more likely you might discover something you love that you wouldn't have done otherwise. If you are able to make the most of every situation you are guaranteed to have an adventure.

Learn the Indigenous significance and history of the area you camp in

This is extremely highly regarded by us!! Not only is important to respect the traditional owners of the land we're enjoying, but it adds such a richness to understanding your surroundings. What might have seemed like an insignificant land formation prior, suddenly becomes fascinating. Seeking out this knowledge is often effortless with Indigenous cultural centres in some places, in others is still sooooo worth the effort. Some places to try include; local Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander land Councils, Tourist information centres for referrals, National parks/State forest offices.

Go for a walk/hike each time I go camping

Getting into nature may sound obvious when camping but many people forget to actually do this and spend all their time at their campsite. Make it a goal to go for a walk or hike every single time you go camping, to see what nature has to offer.

Go camping by yourself

This is another scary one, and you will need to take extra safety precautions. Being alone while camping is special, you get to do anything you want, at anytime you want, but you also are responsible for everything. It gives another level of isolation while bush camping, but if you have never done anything like this before you will learn something about yourself.

Go on a Geocaching adventure

If you don't know what Geocaching is you are missing out. Geocaching is where people hide and seek containers, called geocaches, at specific locations marked by coordinates all over the world. You go and try to find these containers and mark your name down. This game will take you to interesting locations and really stretch your hide and seek skills. There are different difficulty levels, with some being extremely challenging. It is a lot of fun for individuals, couples and families alike.

We hope these suggestions make your 2021 more adventurous and fun. Let us know what you think or if you think we missed something.
